Uganda's Power Network on Openstreetmap

Geospatial analysis and mapping allows for better planning especially when it comes to projects that may affect delivery of social services and construction/maintenance of infrastructure, in this case, the power network in Uganda.

For this particular project, datasets in the form of shape files, on the Uganda power plants and transmission lines from Infrastructure Africa were downloaded and edited using several GIS and Open street map tools like quantum geographical information system (QGIS), Merkatoor Open street map editor, and the Java open street map editor (JOSM), which are all open source tools and can be downloaded at the following links:

They have clear and easy installation instructions as well as tutorials, for any assistance on Using those programs. In the end, you will be able to do geographic, location-based digital mapping, at your convenience for a specific purpose, in addition, you can even contact us on how to go about those programs and projects.

The characteristic of information is demonstrated in this project when one is able to: access, modify, and re-distribute information, for re-use by interested parties. This is what we shall be doing in the next couple of weeks following the upload of the power transmission network in Uganda at the ITO world Map, which can also be viewed on the open street map here , as well as the power stations/plants in Uganda which are in their final stages to be uploaded.

More improvements are to be made to some of our features at open street map, case in point is the fact that: we got most of the data for the transmission lines, from infrastructure Africa, and for the power plants, and discovered more information from the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company and the wikipedia websites that showed correct and inaccurate data in the datasets that we had.

Finding ways to rectify the inaccurate data is what we shall be doing in the next couple of weeks.We shall visit, for example the power plants within reach, get their accurate locations using gps devises, involving all interested parties and mappers out there to provide useful, accurate information about the features of interest.
Then we shall also use peoples' knowledge and information on the correct representation for the different features most especially if some one resides in or comes from an area that has a given point of interest.

We already used this strategy when we came across a wikipedia contributor who had provided information on most of Uganda's power plants on the wiki page. click here to view this information.

This is a great example of what we expect of other people who are interested in contributing to this project of mapping Uganda , and if anyone has concrete information about a feature, or would like to correct a feature, please contact us, we are open to share ideas and thoughts, as we map Uganda on the openstreetmap.
